“That which we persist in doing becomes easier to do, not that the nature of the thing has changed but that our power to do has increased”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

EDUCATION

I completed my undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1998, graduating with my Bachelor's degree in Sociology. While earning my Bachelor's degree I also provided counseling services for at risk youth and families at The Heritage Schools in Provo, UT. Following the completion of my Bachelor's degree I returned to my native California to attend California State University at Long Beach (CSULB). I completed my Masters in Social Work degree at CSULB in 2004.

PROFESSIONAL

I have provided counseling for both teens and adults in individual and group settings.

Through a combination of my own personality and unique work experiences I have come to consider building and maintaining strong therapeutic relationships as a personal strength. My experience has shown me that there is a strong relationship between the comfort level of the client and their willingness to roll up their sleeves, do hard things and make the investment to improve themselves. I have really come to love working with the teenage population and helping them deal with a variety of issues.  In addition to working with individuals and couples in therapy, Kristin and I really enjoy being able to speak to groups in various settings.  If you would like more information on this I would encourage you to please reach out to us.

While attending California State University at Long Beach in Southern California I worked for a non-profit organization called Boys Town. Boys Town provides long term services to at-risk teenage boys and girls and their families in a residential setting. They utilize a cognitive-behavioral approach to treatment with an emphasis on behavior modification and skill building. I spent 3 years in direct service and 2 years on the administrative team at Boys Town of Southern California.

Upon completion of my MSW I went to work for the California Department of Corrections, Division of Juvenile Justice (formerly the California Youth Authority). The majority of my time with the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) was spent working in one of their intensive mental health treatment programs at the Preston School of Industry in Ione, California. While there I was responsible for providing individual and group counseling to the youth on a daily basis. I worked from a strengths-based perspective, provided cognitive-behavioral interventions and crisis management. I really enjoyed making connections with many of these young people and seeing them turn many aspects of their lives around. When the state closed the juvenile facility in 2011 for budgetary reasons I moved over to the adult side of corrections to perform a similar job with incarcerated adults. This time spent working in corrections has also given me some unique perspective to pass along in my work with at-risk teens and their families.

PERSONAL

I was born and raised in Northern California. The opportunity to return to my northern home after graduate school and settle down in the Folsom area was a perfect fit. I like to keep my body and mind as happy as I can and for that…I am usually looking to turn something into an exercise challenge most days. At the very least, fitting in a good gym session after the workday does me a lot of good. My wife, Kristin, and I also enjoy getting away for road bike adventures when we can. We love to explore and find amazing new rides. We are busy raising 5 boys and 2 girls who are all turning into teenagers faster than we can believe. I am a SF Giants fan, but we will still get along fine even if you are not. Kristin and I have found that floating around in McCovey Cove outside the ballpark in a little canoe and mingling with the other "boating fans" is almost as fun as being inside.
